QFX and QBO: similar files, different destinations.

Your bank may offer several download options. Choosing the right one can save you an unnecessary conversion.

What is a QFX file?

QFX is a financial exchange file associated with Quicken. It uses OFX-style structured fields for the account, dates, signed amounts, payees and transaction identifiers. It is already machine-readable; it does not need OCR or AI extraction.

What is a QBO file?

A .qbo file is a QuickBooks Web Connect transaction file. It also uses OFX structures but includes the institution details expected by QuickBooks. It is not a company backup, an invoice template or the QuickBooks Online application.

Why renaming is unreliable

Changing .qfx to .qbo does not validate the account structure, fill missing fields or ensure the financial institution is accepted by QuickBooks. A proper conversion checks the source and creates a new output while preserving transaction meaning and identity.

When conversion helps

If you have posted bank transactions in QFX and a supported QuickBooks Desktop workflow requires .qbo, use the QFX to QBO converter. You may still need the current QuickBooks institution details from your bank. If the bank already offers a working QBO download, use that directly.

When you can skip it

QuickBooks Online supports QFX and CSV uploads as well as QBO. Try its native import first. If you are starting with a spreadsheet and specifically need Web Connect output, use CSV to QBO.
